A Story of Resilience

Bethany Meilani Hamilton, an American professional surfer and author, is one of the world’s most inspiring examples of resilience. On October 31, 2003, at just 13 years old, she survived a devastating shark attack that resulted in the loss of her left arm. For many, such a life-changing event would have meant the end of a lifelong dream. However, for Bethany, it became the beginning of an extraordinary journey.

Determined not to let adversity define her, Bethany battled fear, self-doubt, and negative thoughts. Surrounded by a strong support system of family, friends, and mentors, she gradually learned how to adapt. She taught herself to swim and surf using only one arm, proving that limitations can be overcome with perseverance and determination. Her unwavering commitment eventually led her back to competitive surfing, where she became a world champion and an inspiration to millions around the globe.

Bethany’s story reminds us that adversity can strike at any moment. Whether it comes in the form of personal loss, unexpected change, failure, or hardship, challenges are an inevitable part of life. What truly matters is not the adversity itself, but how we choose to respond to it.

This is where the concept of the Adversity Quotient (AQ) becomes important. Adversity Quotient refers to a person’s ability to manage difficulties, recover from setbacks, and transform obstacles into opportunities for growth.

Many people seek a “safe space” where they can avoid challenges and discomfort. However, a safe space should not be mistaken for a place free from adversity. Instead, it should be an environment that empowers individuals to rebuild their resilience, learn from setbacks, and develop the confidence to face future challenges.

One of the most effective ways to build resilience is by practicing intentional gratitude—the discipline of consciously looking for things to be thankful for, even during difficult times. Gratitude shifts our focus from what we have lost to what we still have, helping us recognize the blessings, opportunities, and lessons that can emerge from adversity.

It also keeps pride, resentment, and negativity from taking root, allowing us to maintain a positive and hopeful perspective. Equally important is understanding what is within our control. While we cannot always choose the circumstances we face, we can choose how we respond to them, our attitude, and the actions we take.

Finally, strengthening our faith provides hope, courage, and the confidence to keep moving forward despite life’s uncertainties. By practicing intentional gratitude, focusing on what we can control, and keeping our faith strong, we become better equipped to overcome challenges and transform adversity into an opportunity for growth.
