Online bashing — how to deal with this?

With the continued rise of social media use, online bashing and cyberbullying have become more prevalent. Philippine laws provide several remedies for victims.

The Cybercrime Prevention Act of 2012 penalizes online libel, which involves defamatory statements made through digital platforms. Offenders may face heavier penalties due to the wide reach of online publication.

Other laws, such as the Revised Penal Code, Anti-Bullying Act of 2013, and the Safe Spaces Act, also address various forms of online harassment, including cyberbullying and gender-based abuse.

Law enforcement agencies, including the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) and the Philippine National Police (PNP), have dedicated cybercrime units to handle such cases.

Victims are advised to take screenshots of abusive content, report it through social media platforms, and block the offenders. Complaints may also be filed with the NBI, PNP Anti-Cybercrime Group, or even at the barangay level for immediate concerns.

Legal experts stress the importance of awareness and proper documentation in protecting one’s rights whether in personal relationships, financial obligations, or online interactions.
